Help with Subtraction Facts
**It is critical that students know how to count backwards from 18 to 0, since 18 is the highest number a student will ever have to count backwards from.
 
If having difficulty, have them use a number line as a visual at first.
Use a number line and count back:

12 – 9 = ?  start at the 12 and count back 9.

Use the count on strategy if the difference is small.  For example:

12 – 9 =  à Think 9 and count on to 12

Build up through 10 strategy if one of the digits in the subtraction fact is 8 or 9:

11 -  8 = à  8 plus 2 is ten +1 = 11 so the answer is 3

2 Times Quickie

Double the number.

2 X 8 =      8 +8=16

4 Times Quickie

Simply double a number and then double it again.

4 x 8    =           8+8  = 16          
                      16+16 = 32

5 Times Quickie

Count by fives.


8 Times Quickie

Double the number 3 times.

8 x 6 = 6+6=12

           12+12=24

           24+24=48

9 Times Quickie 

  1. Hold your hands in front of you with your fingers spread out.
  2. For 9 X 3 bend your third finger down. (9 X 4 would be the fourth finger etc.)
  3. You have 2 fingers in front of the bent finger and 7 after the bent finger
  4. Thus the answer must be 27
  5. This technique works for the 9 times tables up to 10.

 

10 Times Quickie

Just add a zero after the number.

11 Times Quickie

  1. 11 times any single digit number is the number twice - 11x2=22

11 Times Quickie #2

  1. Use this strategy for two digit numbers only.
  2. Multiply 11 by 18. Jot down 1 and 8 with a space between it. 1 --8.
  3. Add the 8 and the 1 and put that number in the middle: 198

Capacity is the amount of liquid a container can hold. Capacity can be measured in customary or

metric units.


Find capacities by using cups, pints, and quarts

How many cups of water will it take to fill the quart container? (4)

How many cups of water will it take to fill the pint container? (2)

How many pints will it take to fill the quart container? (2)

So 1 pint = 2 cups; 1 quart = 2 pints; and 1 quart = 4 cups.

Weight is the measure of how heavy an object is. A scale is the tool used to measure weight. A scale contains a spring that is pulled down by the force of gravity and measures how heavy an

object is.

Understanding the Difference Between Mass and Weight

 

Mass and weight are similar, but they are not the same. Gravity influences weight, but does not affect mass. Your weight could change if you were on another planet with more or less gravity

than Earth. Your mass, or the measure of the amount of matter in your body, would not change.

 

Suppose you took a trip to the moon. If you got on a scale on the moon you would weigh much less than on Earth. The moon has less gravity than Earth. Since the amount of gravity affects

weight, you would weigh less on the moon than on Earth. The moon pulls down on your body less than Earth does, so your weight would be less on the moon.There is still the same amount of you no matter where you are. Your mass on the moon would be

the same as on Earth.

 

Mass is the measure of the amount of matter in an object. A balance is the tool use to measure mass. An object is placed on one of the balance pans. Masses are placed on the other balance

pan so that the two balance pans hold the same amount of matter.
